We are looking for a Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) Research & Development Engineer to join our Photonics and Quantum Sensing team and contribute to the development of high-performance inertial sensing technologies.
The role is primarily focused on the design, development and performance improvement of Fiber Optic Gyroscopes, combining a strong understanding of FOG physics and photonic systems with experimental characterization and system-level engineering.
The successful candidate will initially contribute to the development and maturation of a high-performance FOG-based inertial system and will subsequently continue working on the evolution of our FOG technology, targeting improvements in FOG performances, as well as investigating future advanced and photonics and quantum inertial sensing technologies.
Tasks to be performed
Design and develop high-performance Fiber Optic Gyroscopes and their photonic subsystems.
Define and optimize FOG architectures, optical configurations and key technical requirements.
Analyze the main physical and technological mechanisms limiting FOG performance.
Develop solutions to improve bias stability, scale factor stability, noise performance, thermal behavior and repeatability.
Define, maintain and refine FOG performance and error budgets.
Support the selection and integration of optical, optoelectronic and electronic components.
Model and analyze FOG and subsystem behavior using MATLAB, Simulink, Python or equivalent engineering tools.
Define and execute characterization and validation campaigns.
Analyze experimental data, identify performance-limiting mechanisms and correlate results with analytical or numerical models.
Troubleshoot complex optical and system-level issues and propose design improvements.
Work closely with electronics, embedded software, mechanical and systems engineering teams.
Support the transition of FOG technology from R&D prototypes toward robust, repeatable and industrializable products.
Contribute to the investigation of next-generation inertial sensing concepts.
Required skills, experience and candidate profile
Degree in Physics, Photonics, Telecommunications Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a related field (PhD highly valued).
Proven professional experience specifically in the design and development of Fiber Optic Gyroscopes is required.
4+ years of relevant professional or R&D experience, with significant hands-on involvement in FOG technology.
Strong understanding of FOG operating principles and the photonic architecture of interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes.
Experience with optical fiber coils, light sources, integrated optical components, photodetection and associated optical subsystems.
Strong understanding of noise, bias, scale factor, thermal effects, drift and other mechanisms affecting FOG performance.
Experience in experimental characterization and performance analysis of FOGs or high-performance optical sensing systems.
Ability to move between theoretical analysis, system design and experimental validation.
Experience working in multidisciplinary R&D environments.
High level of technical English.
Additionally, we will value experience in
MATLAB/Simulink and scientific programming in Python.
Signal processing and control techniques applied to FOG systems.
Inertial navigation and high-performance inertial sensing.
Development of products for aerospace, defense or other demanding environments.
Transition from R&D prototypes to preproduction or industrialized systems.
Quantum sensing technologies.
NV-center-based sensing technologies.
